In this post you will know how to negotiate with HR's in IT India. I hope the following steps will help you the process how to negotiate with HR.
HR: What is your current salary?
You: Rs 2 Lakh per annum
HR: What is your expectation?
You: Rs 4 Lakh per annum
HR: You are asking for 100% hike, this is not possible
You: But I am currently underpaid, with my skill and experience there are lot of people who earn more than Rs 4 Lakh per annum
HR: As per our company policy we can offer maximum 25% hike so the maximum we can offer you is Rs 2.5 Lakh per annum
You: No, this is very less, can you offer Rs 3.5 Lakh per annum?
HR: No, we cannot offer anything more than Rs 2.5 Lakh per annum
After a lot of negotiation you finally agree with Rs 2.8 Lakh per annum
The issue with this conversation is the line highlighted in bold above. Your expectation is Rs 4 Lakh per annum while the HR is ready to offer only Rs 2.5 Lakh per annum. HR’s logic of calculation is your current salary and maximum 25% hike which is their policy.
The most important point in this conversation is the point when the HR asks your expectation. Instead of saying that your expectation is Rs 4 Lakh per annum, you can actually ask a question in return: How much is the company willing to pay the right candidate for this position? or what is your budget for hiring the right candidate?
If they are not ready to share those details and you dont have a way out but to mention your expectation then point blank quote a very high number(even if it sounds unrealistic). For example, if your current salary is 2 Lakh per annum then say that your expectation is 6 Lakh per annum. Make this number as the highest point of negotiation, that is, from 6 come down to 5.8, from 5.8 to 5.6 and so on.
If the HR says that their policy is maximum 25% hike then tell them it is not the right way to rollout offers because one candidate may have current salary of 2 Lakh while someone else may have current salary of 3 Lakh so 25% of hike for each candidate will vary based on their current salary. Hence, you need to ask the same question again…
How much is the company willing to pay the right candidate for this position? or what is your budget for hiring the right candidate?
Needless to say that negotiations require patience and are generally difficult to manage but being assertive and logical helps.
